PhD

The Computer and Information Science PhD prepares students to undertake independent research to significantly advance the field of computer science. Doctoral students work closely with faculty who are leaders at the frontier of research in computer science, developing knowledge of theory, methods and experimental skills while making their own important contributions and discovery that moves the field of computing forward.

Computer & Information Sciences PhD

The Computer and Information Science PhD prepares students to undertake independent research to advance the state of the art in the field of computer science. To provide a foundation for exploration of research topics, students complete graduate-level coursework in the beginning of the program that provides a strong foundation in fundamental areas of computer science, including theory, systems and programming and collection of courses that provide a deeper dive in their selected research area. The focus of the program is on the development of research skills, with direction and mentorship by a faculty research advisor and culminates in the presentation of a dissertation that captures a significant independent research contribution. Throughout the program, doctoral students are welcomed as members of an inclusive research community, with opportunities to engage in departmental colloquia featuring experts on emerging and exciting topics in computer science research communities and to engage in collaborative, cross-disciplinary projects in both academia and industry.

Bioinformatics PhD

The Bioinformatics PhD prepares students to undertake independent research to advance the state of the art in the application of sophisticated computing technologies to address questions on typically massive amounts of biological data. Our program includes tracks that allow for focused research in the areas of computational genomics, computational chemistry and the data sciences. One of only a few bioinformatics doctoral programs in the Greater Philadelphia region, this program prepares students for advanced careers in both industry and postdoctoral academic research. Students have opportunities to collaborate with College of Science and Technology faculty and partners from Temple University Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center on cutting-edge computational methods. Current bioinformatics research is performed in man of Temple's state-of-the-art labs and research centers, including the Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology, the Center for Computational Genetics and Genomics and the Center for Genomics and Evolutionary Medicine.
