Accessing Temple Lab Computers from Home using Telnet

The Computer and Information Sciences Department lab machines are only accessible from within Temple's network.  In order to connect to any of the lab machines from outside of Temple's network you must first connect to the Temple Unix Server.  In order to do this you need a University account in addition to your normal lab account.  You also need an internet service provider such as MSN, CompuServe, Comcast, or the like.

Information about getting an account may be obtained from

     AccessNet Account Procedures

or by going directly to the

     University HelpDesk website.   (A site containing volumes of useful information)

                                               ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You connect to your lab machine from outside Temple's network using a program called telnet as follows:
1)   Connect to your internet service provider as you normally would to use you browser, e-mail, etc.
2)   Click on the <Start> button in the lower left hand corner of the desktop.
3)   Select the <Run> option from the <Start> menu.
4)   When the Run window pops up, type
                telnet unix.temple.edu
      into the edit box next to the Open: prompt and click on the <OK> button.
5)   Type in your Temple University User Name and Password when you are prompted to do so.
6)   Once you have successfully logged into the University server, select the menu option to exit to the command prompt.
7)  Once you are at the University Unix command prompt type:
                ssh2 lab_account@lab_machine
      where lab_account is your Lab User Name and lab_machine is the name of the machine that your lab_account is on
For example, if your Lab User Name is c071110 and your lab account is on lucas you would type:
       ssh2 c071110@lucas
8)   Type in your Password when you are prompted to do so
You are connected to your lab machine just as if you are in the lab itself and all of the same commands (pico, pine, gcc, etc.) are available as are your lab program files
9)   To exit when you are done, type:
       exit
      at the lab machine command prompt which will log you off of your lab machine and return you to the University server.
      Next type:
       exit
at the Unix server command prompt which will log you off of University Server.  Then disconnect as you normally would from your internet service provider
