With video conferencing platforms such as Zoom experiencing hundreds of millions of users each day, Jie Wu has developed a technique to defend against real-time deepfake video chat forgeries.
Deepfake (a portmanteau of “deep learning” and “fake”) forgeries use artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to superimpose existing images and videos onto another subject’s face—techniques that have been used to create fake celebrity pornographic videos, bogus news and malicious hoaxes.

Braswell, pursuing a PhD in computer science education, chose the latter. No longer restricted by limited in-school computer access, she began tinkering with her computer and got so good at coding that her parents were asking her computing questions. Indeed, she got so good at it that she went on to a position as an experience researcher and interaction designer for Apple.

If you recently used Google to have food delivered by a restaurant near you, Andrea Chang (BS’17, CIS) - a Google technical solutions consultant who works on that technology - had something to do with it.
This past summer her enjoyment of working at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, was further enhanced by having her brother Charles join her in the Silicon Valley. He is now a junior at Temple who, like his sister before him, is a mathematics and computer science major - and spent this past summer in a highly coveted Google internship in San Francisco.
