Minimum Requirements for Admission to CIS Graduate Programs

Minimal Admission Requirements: Professional Science Masters in Cyber Defense and Information Assurance

  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 system.
  • The GRE examination is required. However, applicants can request a GRE waiver if they have significant work experience (3 years or more) in the information technology field. GRE scores must be at least the 75th percentile on the quantitative section and at least the 25th percentile on the verbal section are expected. Most students submit scores far above the minimums in each of the Verbal and Quantitative sections. Minimum total score required on the new GRE: 300.
  • For applicants whose native language is not English, the TOEFL, IELTS, OR  PTE Academic exam is required. The minimum TOEFL score is 85 iBT or 563 PBT. The minimum IELTS score is 7.0. The minimum PTE Academic score is 53.
  • Having completed the following accredited coursework (or equivalent work experience or placement). Click here to see a diagram of pre-requisite courses. If you have questions about satisfying pre-requisite courses, please email sallyk@temple.edu
    • a course in Data Structures (such as Temple's CIS 2168) and
    • a course in Computer Architecture, Operating Systems and Networking (such as Temple's CIS 2229). 
  • A successful interview by designated faculty. For the PSM application, we prefer your statement of goals to be approximately 250-500 words explaining why you want to pursue this program and how it aligns with your career objectives.
  • The PSM CyberDIA program will start in the Fall 2016 semester. Applications are currently being accepted and evaluated on an ongoing basis. To ensure the full consideration for being accepted for the Fall semester, domestic applicants should submit their completed application before June 15th and foreign applicants should submit their completed application before Dec 15th. If you miss the application deadline, you may be eligible to take (up to two) courses as a non-matriculated student.

Minimal Admission Requirements: Master of Science in Computer Science

  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 system.
  • The GRE examination is required. GRE scores of at least the 75th percentile on the quantitative section and at least the 25th percentile on the verbal section are expected. Most students submit scores far above the minimums in each of the Verbal and Quantitative sections. Minimum total score required on the new GRE: 300
  • For applicants whose native language is not English, the TOEFL, IELTS, OR  PTE Academic exam is required. The minimum TOEFL score is 85 iBT or 563 PBT. The minimum IELTS score is 7.0. The minimum PTE Academic score is 53.
  • All applicants must have had at least 1 year of programming experience (or two programming courses) and must have completed 1 year of calculus.
  • If an applicant has not completed the following coursework, they must do so before they can take graduate courses. Applicants who lack 2000 level coursework can be granted a conditional acceptance which will be converted to a full acceptance upon their second semester, but only if they successfully complete all 2000 level courses. Graduate students are not permitted to take 2000 level courses after their first semester. 
    • coursework in Data Structures and Algorithms (such as CIS 2168 and CIS 3223)
    • coursework in Computer Architecture, Systems Programming and Operating Systems (such as CIS 2107 and CIS 3207)
    • coursework in Computer Theory (such as CIS 2166) 
    • If you wish to take elective courses in Intelligent Systems (such as Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining), a strong math background is required (Linear Algebra, Multi-variate Calculus, and Statistics). 

Minimal Admission Requirements: Master of Science in Data Science

  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 system.
  • The GRE examination is required. GRE scores of at least the 75th percentile on the quantitative section and at least the 25th percentile on the verbal section are expected. Most students submit scores far above the minimums in each of the Verbal and Quantitative sections. Minimum total score required on the new GRE: 300
  • For applicants whose native language is not English, the TOEFL, IELTS, OR  PTE Academic exam(link is external) is required. The minimum TOEFL score is 85 iBT or 563 PBT. The minimum IELTS score is 7.0. The minimum PTE Academic score is 53.
  • All applicants must have had at least 1 year of programming experience (or two programming courses) and must have completed 1 year of calculus.

Minimal Admission Requirements:  Master of Science in Information Science and Technology

  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 system.
  • The GRE examination is required. GRE scores of at least the 75th percentile on the quantitative section and at least the 25th percentile on the verbal section are expected. Most students submit scores far above the minimums in each of the Verbal and Quantitative sections. Minimum total score required on the new GRE: 300
  • For applicants whose native language is not English, the TOEFL, IELTS, OR  PTE Academic exam is required. The minimum TOEFL score is 85 iBT or 563 PBT. The minimum IELTS score is 7.0. The minimum PTE Academic score is 53.
  • The following accredited coursework (or equivalent work experience):
    • two consecutive programming courses in the same language (such as CIS 1068 and 2168),
    • coursework in computer operating systems and networking (such as CIS 2229 and CIS 3329), 
    • a database course (such as CIS 2109 or CIS 4331), and
    • a course in web or mobile application development (such as CIS 2308 or CIS 3515 or  [CIS 3309 and CIS 3342]).

Minimal Admission Requirements: Doctor of Philosophy

  • Admission to the PHD program is given only to applicants with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or Management Information Systems (or related field) from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum GRE Quantitative and Verbal (or equivalent GMAT) scores are 75th percentile or better. The quantitative scores must be in the 75th percentile or better. Minimum total score: 300
  • For applicants whose native language is not English, the TOEFL, IELTS, OR  PTE Academic exam is required. The minimum TOEFL score is 85 iBT or 563 PBT. The minimum IELTS score is 7.0. The minimum PTE Academic score is 53.
